Note2 for A)-II): Generally speaking, last names of Japanese people do not begin with L, P, Q, V nor X.
Note3 for A)-II): If you need a list of Japanese photographers in AIUEO order (GOJU-ON order, fifty-sound order), please let me know.
Note4 for A)-II): * and ^ (the same as noted in A) above)
* means you can see reproduction(s) of the photographer's work(s) in the exhibition catalogue "The Founding and Development of Modern Photography in Japan." (Please see C)-1) below.)
^ means you can see reproduction(s) of the photographer's work(s) in the exhibition catalogue "Japanese Photography in 1930s." (Please see C)-2) below.)
Note5 for A)-II): place of birth and place of death
In Occidental countries, I think it is usual to mention places of birth and death in people's biologies or biological notes. But in Japan it is not the case. In most biologies only places of birth are included in Japan. This is the reason I can pick up only places of birth above. To find out a place of death, even of famous photographers, is sometimes very difficult.
Note6 for A)-II): "prefectures" in Japan
In Japan, there are 47 prefectures, including Tokyo prefecture, Osaka prefecture, Kyoto prefecture and Hokkaido prefecture. We Japanese use four kinds of Japanese words for "prefecture." For most prefectures, "ken" are used. For example, Kanagawa-ken, where Yokohama exists, for Kanagawa prefecture, and Hyogo-ken, where Kobe exists, for Hyogo prefecture. For Osaka prefecture and Kyoto prefecture, we use "fu," that is Osaka-fu and Kyoto-fu. For Tokyo prefecture, we use "to," that is Tokyo-to. Lastly, for Hokkaido prefecture, we use "do," that is Hokkaido. (Literally, "Hokkai prefecture" might be correct. But usually we do not use this name, "Hokkai prefecture" because this sounds strange for Japanese.) As you might notice, "ken" are used for 43 prefectures other than 4 prefectures, that are Tokyo prefecture, Osaka prefecture, Kyoto prefecture and Hokkaido prefecture.
Further, please note that Tokyo city, Osaka city and Kyoto city are respectively located in Tokyo prefecture, Osaka prefecture and Kyoto prefecture but are different from Tokyo prefecture, Osaka prefecture and Kyoto prefecture. It is the same situation where New York city is located in but different from the state of New York.
Customarily we do not use the word "prefecture" (nor "to," "fu," "ken") in our address written in English. For example, the address of Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Modern Art is;
Note7 for A)-II): [AS25-4] in the list means that the photographer's work appeared in the 1924-1925 issue of the Japan Photographic Annual (published by ASAHI Shimbun) as the plate No. 4. For another example, [AS26-FP] means a frontispiece of the 1925-1926 issue of the Japan Photographic Annual. As to the Japan Photographic Annual, please refer to "III Photographers appeared in annuals between 1920 and1945."
